Denver's Chronic Pain 'Fascia
Release' Specialist

"Tatay, sino yun?" "Dad, who is that?" Young Milo pulled on his father's hand and pointed to a village elder, who was steaming banana leaves to place on the chest of a young man lying sick on the ground. This was Milo's first exposure to hilot, an ancient healing tradition from his native Philippines -- that utilizes both physical and spiritual interventions for curative ends.   This early impression guided Milo in the decades to follow -- first, in his path to becoming a registered nurse in two countries, then to becoming a licensed massage therapist, to his continued study and evolution as a healer with a vast toolbox of therapeutic practices from around the world. His breadth of experience and study of traditions with centuries of history yields an approach to healing that is both universally informed, and totally unique.  Through his work, Milo seeks to offer not only temporary relief from symptoms, but to address the root causes of pain and illness -- a deeper process bringing sustained wellness. "True healing is holistic: it's the result of opening not just the energy channels of the physical body, but also the channels of the mind and spirit. If you touch one or two, but not all three, the healing won't be complete. Do you understand?" With the laugh and enthusiasm of a firey Pinoy, the intuitive sense of a shaman, and the robustness and tenacity of an Olympian, Milo's approach to massage and bodywork is a singular blend of Western and Eastern traditions that rehabilitate and nourish the whole person -- mind, body and spirit.

Your session begins with an assessment of your flexibility, your joints and density of your muscles.

I begin the assessment by identifying the ROOT cause of the symptoms causing your pain that has been lingering for days, weeks, months or even years. This is very intensive bodywork. HURT SO GOOD!

For releasing stress in general, build up of fascia, free stiffness, free tightness, free muscle tension, tender tissue, inflammation & adhesion. Work is on specific muscles or full body treatment, i.e. neck, shoulders, arms & hands, back, hips, knees & feet. Working through the pain will cure the pain.

Session might involve TOK-SEN wooden mallet massage- to breakdown fascia, knots and stiff muscle, myofascial decompression (cupping), hydrotherapy, hot stone, Gua-Sha scraping, bamboo stick massage and sauna.

The spine "Is the axis of the Universe", it holds your body, head and neck. It's very important that the spine receives bodywork otherwise it will become rigid.

Abdominal Massage clears energetic & physical blockages in the abdomen. It can provide relief from constipation, gut issues, insomnia, feeling emotionally stuck, chronic fatigue, menstrual cramps, anxiety, depression, excessive worrying, grief & infertility. Great for detoxifying internal organs.

Massge vs Bodywork

Massage or Bodywork?

Massage promotes relaxation. It involves techniques of touch and strokes to the muscles and soft tissue in order to achieve relaxation and to improve your well-being. Bodywork on the other hand promotes healing. Bodywork is the application of a specific set of methods manipulating the body to promote overall health. If you are experiencing pain, whether chronic or acute or you are looking to improve overall function, I recommend my 'Milo Bodywork Therapeutic Healing' treatment. This individualized treatment is for restoring the body's balance and health eliminating pain and improving function. For some this method of treatment can be painful and can take multiple treatments to experience measurable results.   The benefit of restoring your body's balance is a deeper sense of relaxation that is more effective than massage.

It's All About The Fascia!

Effective treatment should address more than just the physical body; bones, muscles, nerves and blood circulation. This is what sets Asian styles apart from western massage. Thai Massage, Japanese Shiatsu, Chinese Tui Na, and Indian Yoga Therapy each find their roots in the Asian family of bodywork styles. Asian style of bodywork focuses on energy pathways (fascia) which are the support structure for the physical body connecting everything including our organs. In Thailand this energy is called ‘Lom’ the wind of life, in Japan the vital force or ‘Ki’, in China ‘Qi‘ or air, and ‘Prana’ breath in India. While there isn't an English equivalent for these words think of it as 'life energy'. Each of us suffers through pain. All of my work addresses this pain in one way or another. Believe it or not, the pain you experience is likely due to your 'fascia'. Decades ago medical students were taught to 'toss' the connective tissue surrounding our internal organs and throughout our muscles into a trash bin during dissection. Western medical science referred to fascia as the 'packing material' of our internal systems but they didn't understand at the time that fascia is the body's largest sensory organ. Johns Hopkins says that fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in place. The tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When stressed, it tightens up. When you experience 'muscle' pain it is more likely that your fascia is 'sticky' and does not glide as it should. My techniques reverse our sedentary lifestyle's damage to fascia. The layers upon layers of fascia in our bodies are actually made up of 'web-like structures that are meant to glide along each other. When we experience pain it is possible our fasica is 'sticky' instead of 'slippery'. By compressing or decompressing the muscle tissue we create space for the fascia to receive better circulation of water, collagen, and cells. Continued compression and decompression will allow the fascia to fall back into an organized structure rather than a spaghetti structure resembling strings tied in knots. Since fascia is the largest sensory organ it only stands to reason why some of our muscles are so tender. My work is deep and painful at times. But with consistent work, the fascia becomes less sticky and is able to glide the way it is meant to. The long-term results are better flexibility and less pain overall.

This energy runs in channels called ‘Sen’ line (Thai Massage), ‘Meridian’ path (Chinese Medicine), or ‘Nadi’ channel (Indian Yoga). Unfortunately conventional "Western Medicine" does not yet recognize this energy, however healing methods based on this energy have been successfully used for millennia in Thailand, China and India until today to treat and, prevent disease. When our bodies experience motion, movement, and activity they tend to be free of pain. When muscles are under or overused they stiffen and shorten, resulting in restricted movement, tightness and pain which can ultimately lead to disease. Thai bodywork offers a profound solution to counteract and reverse many of the symptoms that lead to disease.

FAQ

Appointment Details

Sixty minute appointments include 5 minutes for changing clothes. Please arrive on time.

Reschedule or cancel an appointment?

You should reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours in advance of the appointment. If you do not provide sufficient notice you will be charged the full amount for the treatment scheduled.

What is the best treatment for me?

During the initial assessment we will discuss the best treatment and talk about my recommendation. Please note treatments are for health and therapeutic purposes only. My practice is strictly non-sexual.

What is the optimal length of time for a massage?

A 60 minute massage is of course wonderful for providing quick relief, however it is recommended to schedule 90 minute sessions or more to allow appropriate interaction so together we are able to address your specific chronic conditions.

What do I wear?

For the 'Thai' massage loose clothing. For the 'Swedish + Deep Tissue + Hilot Therapy' massage there will be draping and for my 'Signature' massage it will depend on the therapy so wear loose clothing and we can adjust as needed during your treatment.

Should I eat a meal before my treatment?

Do not eat prior to a session. If you do plan to enjoy a meal before your session please do so at least 2 hours before.

Pain level of Thai Bodywork

Thai massage uses slow and deep compression with gentle rocking, and assisted stretching on the body’s sen ‘energy’ lines. For some, deep compression can result in discomfort. As we age we lose flexibility and our joints become stiff and any pressure on the muscle can be painful. This is due in part to a sedentary lifestyle. I use yoga influenced stretching and compressions to guide muscles and encourage them to lengthen. This approach ultimately leads to increases in flexibility and decreases of stiffness and discomfort.

Arriving at my studio

My studio is located at 800 West 8th Avenue unit 106. The main entrance is located on Inca St. south of 8th Avenue. There are a few 'unlimited' parking spots immediately in front of the main entrance and 2 hour street parking along the rest of Inca. There are two paid parking lots on Santa Fe between 7th and 8th. When you arrive press 'Milo Bodywork' on the key pad and I will buzz you in.

Optimize your experience

Please communicate what you would like in terms of pressure, music volume, or otherwise. Letting me know your key concerns prior to and during the treatment ensures that you will get the most out of your session.

Bodywork Aftercare

Warm water is best after your session. Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol, and strenuous activities. Stretch to realign your muscle fibers. Plan to eat healthy food and get adequate rest.

Deep tissue and communication

I WORK DEEPLY. Therefore please be advised that it is common to feel sore after a massage. It is also common to experience bruising especially if you bruise easily. I encourage you to communicate with me and let me know if I am working too deeply for you. This open and honest communication is crucial for your enjoyment and satisfaction with the experience.

Rest after your session

Please allow time after your bodywork to rest. Your system deserves time to fully circulate and appreciate the intense work it just experienced.

Frequency

Of course this depends entirely on your individual condition, goals, and budget. More acute cases benefit from one to three treatments in close succession. Chronic cases benefit from more regular treatments. In order to maintain health and for the prevention of illness I recommend bi-monthly sessions.

Payment

Cash is preferred.  I accept top P2P payment types such as Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle. I also accept all credit and debit cards.
